How to Watch NESN Without Cable

These days, not a lot of people have cable subscriptions. Instead, folks rely on a combination of different streaming services and websites to get their television fix. This is great when you only consume television and films, but what about when it comes to live sports? Particularly the NESN.

Now, the NESN belongs to the Boston Red Sox and the Bruins and stands for the New England Sports Network.

It originated in 1984 and soon became a hub for the best coverage of live sports next to ESPN. Through cable distribution in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and Connecticut, this channel amassed a generous viewership, but if you don’t live in those areas, can you watch NESN content in 2022 without a cable subscription?

The short answer is yes! But there is only one option for those who do not live in New England.

Let’s explore all the options below.

Fubo TV

Fubo TV originated in 2015 and marketed itself as the only live sports-centric streaming service appealing to everyone in the house. This option for cord-cutters lets sports enthusiasts choose from over a hundred sports channels to catch the best live coverage, recaps, and live games.

Fubo offers NESN and NESN plus to subscribers. Plus 1000 hours of DVR cloud storage and access to programs that aired up to 72 hours ago. Fubo has 4K HD viewing, which is rare for sports programs.

How to Get Fubo

To start, you’ll need access to a device with an internet connection. Whether you choose a tablet, phone, smart TV, or computer, navigate to the App Store or finder button and type in Fubo. The app is free to download but to use the subscription, you’ll need to sign up for a plan.

Fubo TV plans include:

  • Pro- 128 channels and over 100 sporting events. You get 1000 hours of DVR space with this option, and you can stream on up to ten screens at once. You get a free-week trial with this subscription of $69.99 per month.
  • Elite– This offer has 181 channels and over 130 sporting events in 4K HD quality. You will feel like you are at the game. You also get Fubo Extra which includes 41 additional channels compared to the pro plan and you get News Plus which also has 12 additional channels included in the subscription. You can stream on up to ten screens at once and invite all your friends over to watch the Bruins or Red Sox games. This costs $79.99 a month with a one-week free trial.
  • Ultimate– The ultimate plan is the most refined plan Fubo has to offer. With 216 channels and 130 sporting events in 4K HD, you won’t regret investing in this service. It includes Fubo Extra and News Plus like the Elite program, but it also offers Showtime and Sports Plus. You also get 1000 hours of DVR cloud recording space, and you can stream on up to 10 screens at once. The total for the Ultimate Fubo package is $99.99 per month with a one-week free trial.

Once you select a plan, your IP address reads the region you are in. Without a VPN, Fubo will only work for those living in New England. You do have to pay an extra fee of $6 a month for access to local channels.

After all of that, log in to your account or create an account and select your channel preferences and set up the DVR cloud storage in settings. Now, you can enjoy all the broadcasted Bruins and Boston Red Sox games as you please.

FuboTV is compatible with Rokus, Smart TVs, Firesticks, and Fubo has a website and app to access via phone or computer.

DirecTV Stream

AT&T’s streaming service, DirecTV Stream, is the non-cable version of DirecTV. AT&T formed this service in November of 2016 to merge services from DirecTV, AT&T, and TPG. The service accumulates content from live TV and on-demand TV without the hassle of signing a contract or signing up for a cable subscription.

Instead, this streaming service is cheaper and easier to use than cable subscriptions. You can watch on up to 20 devices at once, and while the service has its own list of programs, DirecTV Stream works as a host for a slew of other apps, including Hulu, Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO.

With this option, you aren’t limited to just sports like you are with Fubo TV. You can enjoy a variety of television, films, and access to the best sports coverage that exists. However, like Fubo, DirecTV comes with 1000 hours of DVR cloud recording space.

How to Get DirecTV Stream

Just like Fubo TV, you’ll need a device compatible with the internet and an internet connection to download DirecTV. Use your Smart TV, tablet, or phone, click on the app store, type in DirecTV, and download the app. Once you own the app, you can log in or register with an account.

Once you do this, you need to select a plan. Each plan comes with a free five-day trial, so if you end up not liking NESN, you can cancel the service at no additional cost. Plans include:

  • DirecTV Stream Entertainment Package: Over 75 live channels, live sports coverage, and over 40,000 on-demand channels. Twenty hours of cloud storage with an available upgrade of $10 more a month to include unlimited downloads. Showtime, Starz, Epix, and Cinemax come with this package for the first three months of the subscription. This package is $69.99 a month.
  • DirecTV Stream’s Choice Package: This package includes shows, live sports, and 45,000 on-demand programs. You can watch over 100 live tv channels, including regional sports networks, and you get 20 hours of cloud storage with the option to upgrade to unlimited storage for ten more dollars a month. Showtime, Starz, Epix, Cinemax, and HBO MAX come with this subscription for the first three months of service. This service costs $89.99 a month.
  • DirecTV Stream Ultimate Package: This includes 140 channels, 55,000 on-demand programs, live sports, unlimited cloud recordings, regional sports networks, and discounts on premium channels. This plan has a deal right now, and it is reducing the first two months of service from $104.99 to $84.99.
  • DirecTV Stream Premier Package: With 140 channels, 65,000 on-demand programs, access to live sports and regional sports channels, and unlimited cloud storage, you can access this plan today for $129.99 for the first two months instead of $149.99.

Since some of these options allow regional access to sports channels, people can access NESN if they live in New England. DirecTV Stream is compatible with Rokus, Firesticks, Smart TVs, Apple TVs, computers, tablets, and phones. All you need is an internet connection and an account.

NESN 360

This app is fairly new compared to the other streaming services mentioned on this list. NESN 360 emerged at the beginning of the summer on June 1. It is the cheapest option compared to the other two on this list, but it also only offers NESN programs.

Plans range between a monthly payment of $29.99 or $329.99 for the entire year. Use this service to watch Boston Red Sox and Bruins games in high-quality resolution.

You can only use this service if you live in Boston or surrounding areas and have a Roku, Apple TV, Mac, or Android or Apple phone. The service does not work with Fire TV, Android TV, Google TV, Smart TVs, or any projection converter like an XBOX. To find this app, visit their website: NESN.com, and subscribe to the service.

What To Do If You Live Outside of the NESN Area

If you’re a die-hard Boston Red Sox or Bruins fan, but you live outside of New England, that’s okay. You can still use NESN for your viewing pleasure. You will need to set up a VPN.

What Is a VPN?

VPNA VPN is a virtual private network that hides the location of your IP address, protects your identity, and allows you to view content not available in your region. You get to stay safe and watch the team you love.

Some recommended VPNs for NESN are:

1. IPVanish

This US-based VPN, founded in 2012, works best with Windows, Android, and Apple products. It works well with MLB.TV which allows baseball fans to watch baseball during blackout seasons.

2. Surfshark

A service based in the Netherlands and founded in 2018, Surfshark operates on high-speed connections of up to 2×10 gigabits per second, so this VPN does not buffer significantly. Download Surfshark from the App Store today.

3. Express VPN

Express VPN originated in 2009 out of the British Virgin Islands. It has up to 135 megabits per second of speed and privacy and encryption services for devices such as tablets, laptops, and Smart TVs.

Final Thoughts

Although NESN is mostly available to those in the Boston area, there are ways to shift around that geography restriction. If you can’t use Fubo, DirecTV Stream, or NESN 360, you can use a VPN to block your IP address and grant access to these games.

Whether you live near Boston or in a different country, you now know how to watch NESN without cable. Good luck!
