The Story of Little Women

Little Woman Movie IMDB

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3281548/

The Greta Gerwig film finds its origins and source material from the 1868 novel Little Women, written by the great Louisa May Alcott.

Set during the Civil War era, Little Women follows the lives of four sisters as they come of age, from girls to women. The story takes place not chronologically, as the original book did, but instead bounces between past and present, moving from the country to the cities of New York and Paris, and then back again to the country where the sisters, and their friends, grew up.

Beautifully shot, the film’s hues change from past to present, creating an idealized picture of childhood and a far more grim experience of the present. We see the very warm colors of Christmas played against cold winter lighting.

This is a phenomenal undertaking by Director Greta Gerwig, but an undertaking she is most successful in. Those watching Little Women see the point in these changes, and Greta has created an entirely novel story out of this classic. And there are very few movies that can claim to do that.

Each sister has a significant story to tell, but the main character, Jo March, is herself a storyteller. We see Jo March battling a society that wants sensational stories, written by men no less.

Further to these battles, we watch as Jo grapples with life, relationships, and love interests, begging the question, “must all stories end with a love affair? And, is the beginning of a woman’s life marriage? What does it mean if a woman never gets pregnant or never becomes a mother?”

Little Woman starts in the present, with Jo March (Saoirse Ronan) living in New York, attempting to get a publishing house to purchase her writing. Amy March (Florence Pugh) is a painter in Paris (living with her Aunt March, played by Meryl Streep) who encounters an old family friend, Laurie.

Alongside this, we see Meg March, played by Emma Watson, married to a school teacher. Tragedy strikes, however, when the baby of the family and youngest of the four sisters, Beth March (Eliza Scanlen), falls desperately ill. Marmee March, the girls’ mother (Laura Dern), sends word to the sisters, bringing them all together again.

Little Women cuts then to the past. We now see the greater settings of the film, with Marmee and her four girls left in genteel poverty while their father is away fighting in the Civil War.

And so the story moves in this way, ebbing in and out of present and past, as though episodes of Jo March’s memories. These features of Little Women give us a strong sense of juxtaposition between childhood and adulthood, with a deeper sense of children lost, pushed to their limit in a world that would see them pregnant and married without any sign of a life of their own.

And it is this that Little Women challenges most of all.

The Women of Little Women

The cast of Little Women should live rent-free in our minds forever because the term star-studded does not begin to cut it for these outstanding women.

The female cast of this film are:

  • Jo March – Saoirse Ronan
  • Amy March – Florence Pugh
  • Meg March – Emma Watson
  • Beth March – Eliza Scanlen
  • Marmee March – Laura Dern
  • Aunt March – Meryl Streep
