Dayton Flyers Recap and Reminder
This university team competes in the NCAA Division 1 and Atlantic 10 Conference leagues. Anthony Grant is the team’s coach, and he’s in his 5th season. In 2020 they had a magical season and finished in No.3 in the AP Poll.
The Flyers are currently ranked No.23 in the nation and have a high fan game attendance rate. Because of the fan support, the Dayton Arena is known as one of the most challenging arenas to play in, with the best atmosphere in college basketball.
Fans are known as the ‘Flyer Faithful’ and will enthusiastically travel and support the team in hostile and friendly game environments.
The biggest rivals of the Dayton team are:
- Xavier – Dayton has met Xavier in 158 games, and Dayton holds an 84-75 edge over Xavier. The two teams would play for the Blackburn/McCafferty trophy – but since 2013, Xavier no longer competes in the Atlantic 10 League.
- Miami University
- Marquette University
- DePaul University
- University of Notre Dame
- Saint Louis University
During the 1970 and the 1980s, Dayton formed an informal league with the DePaul, Marquette, and Notre Dame basketball teams. This league was formed before any of the schools had league associations and created a friendly rivalry between the schools.
The recent star players of the Flyers are:
- Obi Toppin won the John R. Wooden and Naismith Trophy as the National Player of The Year in 2020. He averaged 20 points per game and had 107 dunks before he was drafted into the New York Knicks in 2020. Toppin was the star player for Dayton and delivered great plays and games for the team.
- Dyshawn Pierre – He played for the team from 2012 to 2016 and was one of the team’s best scorers of all time. He scored 1317 points for the Flyers over his four-year run.
- Jalen Crutcher was a great scorer, leader, and team player from 2017 to 2021. He averaged 30minutes per game and scored 9 points per contest.
- Jordan Sibert had two years with the team but had an excellent reputation for coming through with assists and plays in the nail-biting and clutch moments. He scored 1030 points for the Flyers in his short career with them.
- Scoochie Smith – Smith helped the Flyers rack up 102 wins. He averaged 11 points per game with numerous assists and steals. Smith helped the Flyers win and compete from 2013-to 2017.
