What is Vudu?
Vudu (R) is an American digital video store and streaming service. This service is owned by Walmart and offers transactional on-demand video rentals and digital purchases of films, as well as integration with digital locker services for streaming digital copies of films purchased as home video at retail. There are no installation costs, activation fees, or rental fees. There is also no monthly subscription. This service is available on popular streaming TV devices such as Roku and smart TVs and phones.
In April 2020, it was announced that NBCUniversal subsidiary Fandango Media would acquire the streaming platform Vudu, with the sale expected to close later in the year. As part of the sale, Walmart will maintain its relationships with Vudu, including account integration and promotion of the service via Walmart’s website. The service is expected to operate as a complement to NBCUniversal’s Peacock service.
Vudu’s selection contains over 24,000 titles in its catalog and over 8,000 television shows, making it one of the largest streaming providers of its kind. Titles range from major motion pictures, independent films, documentaries, children’s programming, anime, musicals, recorded musical performances, cartoons, and television series. Films are available to rent in standard-definition, high-definition, and 4K ultra high definition formats, with Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, and HDR10 available on supported devices and content.
How Much Does Vudu Cost?
The price of Vudu depends on what you wish to watch. There are no subscriptions or late fees with Vudu.
Vudu offers a library of free, ad-supported TV shows and movies. There is a wide range of available titles for free. Some stay free and others swap out each week. Users must watch short ads; however, the number of advertisements is very minimal (2-3 mins per half hour). Some popular titles that have been free with ads include Stir of Echos, A Turtle’s Tale, Into the Blue, Hell’s Kitchen, Merlin, Baby Einstein, and many more.
Cord-cutters can rent or purchase movies. The majority of new movies available to purchase will cost $14.99 to $19.99. Typical rental prices range from $3.99 to $5.99. For example, at the time of this publication Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is $5.99 to rent and $14.99 to purchase. Vudu also offers bundles for popular movies, for example at the time of this publication you could buy all three Ghostbuster movies for $24.99.
All purchased movies are ad-free and available at any time. Rentals are good for 30 days. Depending on your rental, once you begin viewing you will have 24 to 48 hours to finish. Vudu has almost every major title released in movie theatres over the past several decades.
TV shows are also available for rental or purchase. The typical price per episode of a TV show is $1.99 to $3.99; however, purchasing entire seasons is a better value.
