AT&T TV Review

AT&T TV (R) is a broadband streaming video service. The service rolled out nationwide on March 2nd, 2020, and has recently undergone a few changes since the initial rollout. There are many pros and cons to this service and we recommend fully researching your individual cord-cutting needs to ensure that this is the best option for you and even how AT&T beats out Spectrum, one of its chief competitors. We will cover many different details about this streaming service throughout our review.

One of the major hurdles for AT&T has been how to incorporate the acquisition of DIRECTV and how to brand their different offerings. When AT&T acquired DIRECTV they also inherited their streaming platform DIRECTV NOW. This was rebranded to AT&T TV NOW which made a lot of sense at the time but then AT&T shifted away from Uverse TV and launched AT&T TV. This proved to be very confusing for customers and did not really meet the wants of customers who were looking to ditch expensive and confusing cable style plans.

AT&T is trending in the right direction and has now merged AT&T TV with AT&T TV NOW. We like this move by AT&T because it brings AT&T TV more in line with traditional streaming television providers and services. Having two similarly named and priced services simply did not make sense and was incredibly confusing to customers. With that said, we think AT&T still has some work to do to bring their products in line with what cord-cutters are demanding.

Another one of the major changes is that AT&T originally required subscribers to sign up for a two-year service plan. This requirement has been dropped; however, subscribers may still choose to opt into a contract to receive lower monthly payments. Pricing is definitely on the higher end of the streaming spectrum but this service does offer all of the top cable, local, and sports channels.

The company also had required subscribers to purchase or rent one of their own streaming boxes which made absolutely no sense given the prevalence of smart TVs, Roku, Amazon Fire devices, etc. They have also dropped this requirement. Cord-cutters can now access this service via many different popular streaming devices, smart TVs, and smartphones.

These are very positive changes, especially considering that AT&T TV is now the only service to offer Fox Regional Sports Networks making it the best way to watch MLB, NBA, and NHL games.

AT&T TV Streaming Packages

Subscribers can choose from several different AT&T TV packages. The available packages are Entertainment, Choice, Xtra, Ultimate, and Premier.

How many streams does AT&T TV allow?

AT&T TV allows three concurrent streams at one time for both contract and no-contract customers. The company recommends a speed of at least 25Mbps. However, you may need more bandwidth if you plan on streaming more than this.

Does AT&T TV have a DVR?

If you sign up for the 2-year contract you will get 500 hours of cloud DVR included. However, if you choose the no-contract route you will only receive 20-free hours of DVR. You can also purchase the DVR upgrade at a separate fee. Subscribers can access all DVR recordings at home or on the go on smartphones and tablets. Recordings expire after 90 days.

Does AT&T require a device?

Yes, AT&T TV requires a streaming device such as a smart TV, smartphone, or streaming device such as an Amazon Fire device. Also available is a proprietary device from the company.

AT&T has dropped the requirement to use their device; however, it is still offered if you opt for the contract. If you do you will receive one sleek and discreet AT&T TV Android TV Box. Each additional box is $10 per month or $120 to purchase outright.

This device can access popular apps such as Netflix, Pandora, Spotify, and more. You get access to over 5,000 Google Play store apps. You can pause and rewind live TV and sports. The Android TV box also comes with Google Assistant voice remote that can be used to say things like, “Play HBO.” or “What is the weather today?”

Their box comes with five ports on the back. There is an HDMI, power, USB, digital audio, and ethernet ports. This device is 4K and HDR-capable; however, there are currently no 4K AT&T TV channels available.

The device does not require professional installation. There are no appointments scheduled with a technician. Simply plug the device in and follow the on-screen instructions and you will be set up in a matter of minutes.

You can also use the app on Apple iOS, Android-powered phones and tablets, and Apple TV and Amazon Fire devices.

Can I watch sports on AT&T TV?

For an additional fee of $8.49/month, you can add regional sports networks to your TV plan. AT&T TV is currently the only streaming service available that offers Fox Regional Sports Networks which means you can watch your favorite local MLB, NBA, and NHL teams with this service.
